Mats Bergström

Swedish guitarist Mats Bergström (b. 1961, Gävle) grew up in a family of musicians in Stockholm. After graduating from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, he studied in London and made his debut at Wigmore Hall. In the 1980s, he became a sought-after session guitarist, performing on both electric and acoustic guitar.

Two years of postgraduate study at the Juilliard School in New York sparked a shift toward chamber music, where he has since built a reputation as a versatile soloist and a sensitive collaborator with many of Sweden’s leading vocalists.

His recordings range from Bach’s Sei Solo (the complete sonatas and partitas for violin) to a Tarrega collection and several Songs Without Words albums with Georg Riedel, reflecting a career defined by technical mastery and musical curiosity.
